Kalumi chats with Bruna Schmitz
This month, Kalumi chats with pro surfer and model Bruna Schmitz Zaun. The down to earth beach babe shares her best beauty secrets as well as what keeps her looking and feeling her best on the go!
Tell us about your childhood- where did you grow up and what was it like?
I grew up in a small town south of Brazil called Matinhos. It was a pretty mellow childhood, there wasn’t much going on in my town so I was quickly draw into the ocean, going to the beach was a everyday hobby for me. I started surfing at the age of 9 and competing at 11, was on the road super young and from then on I was just a citizen of the world.
How did your upbringing shape who you are today?
I grew up with not much, I didn’t need much. I had this idea of seeing the world and thats all I wanted, I got to experience a lot of that thru surfing and that definitely shaped my personality. Being expose to so much culture and experiences helped me grow into the person that Im today, I had amazing parents that were so open and supportive of this life I pursued and Im so thankful for that.
When/how did you start surfing?
My brother got me into it, I was already a little beach rat, I just never knew what the boys were doing out the back, I always stayed on the shore. So came summer of 2000 my brother volunteered at the local surf school and he signed me and my sister for the summer surf classes and thats where it all began.
What has been your biggest accomplishment in your career?
My biggest dream as I started taking surfing seriously was to make the world tour, and I did that when I was 18 for two years. Thats an accomplishment that Im so proud of because it was hard work, and dedication and a lot of sacrifices. My biggest modeling accomplishment would have to be my sports illustrated feature in 2011.
Being exposed to extensive sun and salt can be hard on hair and skin. What are your skin care/hair care tips to preventing damage?
I believe a lot in healthy eating and I think it all starts there, everything else is a bonus. Im tho a product freak so Im always trying new things, but my everyday skin regiment is sunscreen first thing in the am no matter what, I like to exfoliate 2 to 3x a week, and lots of moisturizing, go to’s are La Mer face cream and Aveno or Auctive organic sunscreen for surfing. For my hair I love to use leave in conditioner and leave in oil after I shower to give some extra love. My ultimate secret when Im in the sun a lot and my face is hating me is to clean makeup or sunscreen with coconut oil, I feel like its soothing and gentle.
Whether it be for surfing competitions or modelling jobs, you’re constantly on the go! How do you stay healthy while travelling? (mind, body, spirit)
If I feel like my immunity is low before going on a trip I like to take this immunity shots which is essentially garlic, ginger, turmeric and oregano oil. I get some from a local spot by my house called The Source, It tastes gnarly but it works. Overall I try to eat super healthy and drink tonsss of water. I love yoga it calms my mind keeps my body healthy and I also do intensive pilates classes.
What is your feel good indulgence?
I LOVE DESERT, my husband always teases me, he says I have no self control, which I don’t haha!
What does beauty mean to you?
Happiness comes first.
Finally, what was the best piece of advice you ever received and why?
My dad used to always say to me before I would leave on a trip for a contest he would say “Do it because you love it, not because you have to." I love that, I try to carry this advice in all aspects of my life.
