Alexandra Grief- owner of Montce Swim
When did you know that you wanted to be a designer?
I think I really decided that I wanted to go in a fashion direction in High School. I always knew I would do something in art or something creative.
What inspired you to start your own brand/business?
Between traveling to central america a lot and surfing whenever there was a little ripple in south florida, I pretty much was always in a bikini. I think the inspiration of the smaller cut, mix matched bikini, and laid-back lifestyle from my travels really inspired me. I kinda took that idea mixed with my desire to make this really flattering bikini
Who/ What is your biggest source of inspiration for Montce?
Everything! I look everywhere for inspiration.
Your favorite quote/affirmation?
I don’t really have one off hand … but I do really like this one Bob Dylan lyric .. “ Don’t think twice it’s alright.”
What does beauty mean to you?
I think confidence has a lot to do with it.
How do you find balance in your life? (Job, love, life… )
Still working on that. It’s really hard for me because designing, creating, and styling are my favorite things to do, but they are also my job. Obviously theres a lot less fun things about my job like quality control, test fitting and perfecting fit , and answering a thousand emails a day, but it’s definitely become more of a priority in the last year. I think planning fun trips really forces me to kinda take a break from work and enjoy life a little bit more. Working on the daily balance though too and trying out different things like yoga, meditation, or even just getting outside more. We shall see haha.
What has been your proudest/most exciting moment since starting Montce?
Signing the lease and decorating my first Montce Shop (from my apartment) was probably the most exciting moment. The second shop and moving out to Cali was equally exciting.
I also get super excited when I finally get to see the new collections on an actual model, all styled up on the collection shoots, thats probably my favorite.
What is your best piece of advice for aspiring Entrepreneurs?
I guess it would be to keep yourself as a priority and find the balance in your life. Also i really feel that if you want something bad enough you can create it and make it happen with hard work, focus, and passion. You don’t need a million dollars to start it, work with what you have today and take it from there day by day. (cheese city but true!)
If you could, what would you tell your younger self?
i guess just not to worry about being successful and just enjoy it all.
What’s next? What is your vision for your business and beyond?
More cover-ups and hopefully active wear!
