How to find health & happiness in 2018

Forget a New year’s resolution, these tips will help towards a healthier, happier you in 2018. Yes, it’s easy to let the craziness of life get the best of us, but veering so far off track that we forget what we truly wanted out of life, and why we really wanted it is not an adequate mindset for being healthy and happy. That’s why staying focused on our goals is not only important, it’s crucial.

Know your goals

What are your goals for 2018? Getting a new job? Finding love? A new home? Working out more?

Be sure to have a clear understanding of what you want to accomplish in the new year. Write your goals out on a piece of paper in detail. For example, if your goal is to “get fit”, know how fit you want to be and exactly how you will accomplish this. Will you dedicate one hour at least 4 days a week to the gym? Will you set a goal for burning a certain amount of calories per day? The more detailed you are with your goals, the more likely you are to achieve them!

Find motivation… and keep it!

We have all been there… one day we are bursting and ready to get everything on our list done and the next day that motivation is nowhere to be found.. Staying motivated to accomplish your goals can be hard. In the beginning it’s all rainbows and butterflies, until of course the excitement wanes.

When we get caught up, frustrated, overloaded, disheartened, overworked or distracted, it is easy to veer off track.

The key to motivation is inspiration!

Regularly check out your competition to get inspired. Go back to your list of goals and find that excitement and passion.

At the end of the day, no one is there to hold your hand through the rough patches. It’s up to you to stay focused and motivated to achieve your goals.

Prioritize your health and wellbeing

When obligations pile up, and life stretches us thin, our health and wellbeing is generally the first to suffer. When we have a mile long to do list, sometimes it can be hard to squeeze in ANYTHING else.

Set aside one hour a day for you and make it a priority on your to-do list. Whether you need to get up an hour early, or make it your “lunch break,” use this hour to get that body moving! Exercise Is essential in keeping your body healthy, but did you know it can also dramatically improve your mental health? Endorphins that are released during exercise will make you feel on top of the world. Not to mention the feeling of accomplishment that comes with seeing results in the mirror!

Change your mindset

Stress is a toxic emotion that is proven to have an array of negative effects on our bodies. Stress is responsible for inflammation in the body, and chronic stress can even lead to disease.

Working on your mind set sounds like one of those “easier said than done” things. And the truth is, when you are absolutely consumed in stress, it doesn’t seem easy to turn your mindset around in that moment. BUT it is possible!

Here is a simple exercise that can help pull you out of that dark cloud of anxiety:

First, remove yourself from the situation, and go somewhere you can be alone. Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths. Imagine that you are floating out of your body looking down at yourself in that situation (e.g. sitting on your bed/in a toilet cubicle at work). Then look around at the rest of your life. See everyone who loves you- your pets, your house, your achievements. Take a moment to be grateful. Remember, this situation is one tiny little moment in your big beautiful life. If you can keep your eye on the bigger picture, these smaller moments won’t bother you so much. To put your situation into perspective, ask yourself… in one week will this situation even matter? There is very little that is worth all of the negative effects that stress has on the body, and that rude person at work sure isn’t one of them!

Organization is key!

Being organized can save precious time and drastically reduce stress. If you aren’t properly organized in all aspects of life, tasks will pile up and important things could get lost or forgotten, resulting in a chaotic situation that isn’t good for anyone!

Try investing in a cute journal or download an online planner like asana to keep up to date with your tasks and stay on top of them!
